Morrison Gallery presents CIRCLES by Alexander Liberman (1912-1999).
Working from his home studio in Warren, Connecticut, Liberman developed this series of paintings in 1993.
Many may be familiar with his earlier work that emphasized structure, monumentality, and striking color. Liberman is also known for his commanding sculptural works, but CIRCLES reveals a quieter and more fluid sensibility - less geometric and fixed, more open and in motion. The repeated circular motif - never perfectly resolved - becomes a vehicle for variation, with each painting exploring subtle differences in balance, density, and spacial tension.
Several pieces incorporate impasto technique, with built-up surfaces that introduce a tactile dimension and add depth to the otherwise limited palette. This material presence underscores the intimacy of each piece reminding us of the late artist's once very vibrant presence.
CIRCLES offers an opportunity to encounter a late body of work that can be revered as an evolution in the artist's relationship to the canvas, rather than a departure from it. By bringing together this series of paintings, the exhibition CIRCLES welcomes a moment of reflection in the transformation of Liberman's career.
The exhibition will be on view from 11 April through 24 May.
