Rickey’s sculptures exist in a state of perpetual possibility ... precisely balanced, yet never quite still.
George Rickey (1907–2002) is known for kinetic sculpture that transforms movement into an essential part of the work. Constructed from precisely balanced elements of stainless steel, his sculptures respond to wind and air, shifting continuously.
This exhibition brings together two monumental works on view outside the gallery, and a collection of smaller works from the estate and foundation inside. These works reveal the quiet complexity of the artist's movement. Lines, planes, and geometric forms appear to float, pivot, and turn, creating compositions that change from one moment to the next. What initially appears rigid and architectural suddenly becomes remarkably fluid.
Rickey’s sculpture depends on their surroundings. Light moves across their surfaces, shadows change, and even the slightest movement of air can alter their position. The viewer is not simply looking at a finished object, but witnessing something that is constantly becoming.
There is a tension between precision and unpredictability in Rickey’s work. Each element is carefully calculated, yet its movement cannot be completely controlled. The result is a kind of visual choreography, one that is quiet, responsive, and endlessly changing.
